“Lesley Heathcote’s paintings of cats, heifers, and other creatures convey a mythic intensity. They are archetypal and regal.” -Arlene Distler, The Brattleboro Reformer

My oil paintings focus on animals. Animals bring me a heightened sense of the wonder and mystery of the world we live in. I am moved not only by their physical grace and beauty but by their intelligence, character, and interactions with each other and the environment. By painting animals in their lives, I depict a part of the interrelationship of all life.

With pastels I have been exploring the world of plants as well as animals. I find many of the same qualities in them that I observe in animals. My work in both mediums is figurative and narrative, based on specific animals and plants that I have observed and photographed. I am particularly interested in the formal elements of color and composition and how they can be used to communicate my love and respect for the natural world.
